Uncle Tom's

Uncle Tom’s Cabin started as a group of cottages which began to serve refreshments from a stall in the 1850’s. Then in 1860, new owners took over and added sitting rooms, bedrooms, photographic studio and camera obscura.

As the cliffs eroded, the area to the left began to fall into the sea

This card is dated August 1904 and shows a great view. Note the man stood up on the carriage pointing at the driver’s head. On the side of the carriage a sign reads, ‘Toole, Hair King, Leeds & Blackpool’. A mobile barber maybe !

A small advert from a 1903 programme

This is a very clear view postmarked 1906. A group of people on the left can be seen looking out, to what is the sea. The figures on the roof of the dance pavillion are, Uncle Tom, Little Eva and Topsy, characters from the famous novel. These were said to have be put at the rear of the New Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

A nice view showing how close to the sea wall the building was !

A view showing the buildings in their final year

For safety reasons the buildings were demolished on the 4th October 1907

A clear view of the New Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Probably the proud owners outside their new establishment.

Main entrance to the new building

This view dated 1913 shows how far back and across the road the new building was built.
