Freehold Semi-detached Houses – Queen’s Drive North Shore – 1936

The Hotel was being built as the Bryn Tivy in 1922, when it just occupied the corner with King Edward Avenue. Directories and holiday guides show that it had become the Cliffs Hotel by 1929 and had been extended to how it appears in the picture above — what is now just the south wing. In 1936 the present central section with dome was built (architect Halstead Best) and a wing added to the north matching the south wing of about 10 years earlier. It was completed as the New Cliffs Hotel in 1937. That unsympathetic dome-shaped canopy was only added to the entrance about 20 or so years ago.

The Cliffs Hotel developed from the ‘Bryn Twy’ Hotel which was built immediately to the north of the Mount Apartments and now forms the south corner of the Cliffs. The central tower and north wings were built post 1933. Located between King Edward Avenue and Empress Drive
